Pro-Choice/Pro-Life

« previous entry | next entry »

For about 6 months now I’ve been photographing a pro-choice/pro-life rally on Saturday mornings in Miami. This is not a topic I had really given much thought about before deciding to cover it, but I knew it would likely produce compelling photographs.

The pro-lifer’s main objective is to get the women entering the clinic to see their signs, take their pamphlets, scare them off, shame them and ultimately close the clinic down. The pro-choice folks refer to themselves as “clinic defenders” and their main mission is to protect the entrance of the clinic so women can safely gain access to what the clinic defenders refer to as “A woman’s legal right to pregnancy termination”.

When I first arrived I was a bit taken back by the way each side would try and intimidate the other. Both sides would call each other names, push and shove for better positions, and the clinic defenders would shake containers full of beads and rocks to aggravate the pro-lifers with loud noise. The pro-lifers would march back and forth on the sidewalk in front of the clinic trying to make access for cars difficult, and at one point a priest even attempted an exorcism on one of the more aggressive clinic defenders.

After many weeks of this back and forth the police dictated that the two sides stay separate from each other, alternate positions every other week, as one position is believed to be better then the other. This however does not eliminate all conflicts since each side still attempts to aggravate the other.

During these months of protest a documentary was created by Beverly Yuen Thompson, Ph.D. In this documentary you will learn about the Miami Clinic Access Project and what their mission is. You will also see all the events I’ve described above. I have viewed this documentary and recommend it highly. If you’re interested in getting the DVD for yourself, go to this website “www. snakegirl.net” and order it.

Below are some of the photographs I took during these months. If you’re interested in seeing larger versions of these photographs please go to my deviantART or Flickr galleries to view them.

I certainly don't disagree with teaching your children what you believe... I use to be a tool too, and in the end I came to my own conclusions ;)

These pictures are very thought provoking. People tend to demonize the other side on this issue. These pictures show the saints and lunatics on both sides.

I'm really amazed that it's such a battle there! I guess I take for granted that I live in New York City. I regularly escort at Planned Parenthood NYC (PPNYC) and though occassionally obnoxious, the handful of protesters know their boundaries and not to cross them.

We actually have an injunction against two specific guys preventing them from coming within any decent distance of our building b/c they repeatedly broke the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, and bring the cops around anytime the others get too loud b/c it's in a crowded Manhattan neighborhood and the people who live there complain about them weekly.

I thought the FACE law was federal? It's really amazing to me that they try to block cars (thereby blocking entrance) and get that nuts. Wow.

Either way - those photos are amazing. I do especially love the last one :)

The truth is that I was too... We do have The Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act here too and a man was arrested this past Saturday for blocking the entrance... He was pulling that walking super slow crap on the sidewalk in front of the entrance.

Thank you :)

I doubt I'd be able to convince you to call them anti-choice, rather than pro-life, which they are not.

One thing I do want to comment on is your caption to this photo. It reminded me of this post at Feministing. Now, granted, you didn't start comparing the attractiveness of women on either sides or use their looks to judge the validity of their position. Still, I would urge you to consider the implications of underscoring that woman's appearance instead of the cause she is out there for.

Well.. The reason I chose that caption had nothing to do with how attractive I may have thought she is, and more to do with the definition of her real name (I looked it up at a baby names site online). I often have a hard time choosing names for my photos and will often use inspiration from songs, books, meaning and many other ways. Maybe I will look more to find something people would better understand :)
