"May Day" Protest

« previous entry | next entry »
20050523 | 12:37 am

Back on May 1st there was a protest in downtown Miami at “The Torch of Friendship”. Although “May Day” is the traditional labor holiday there were people protesting many different government policies aside from labor issues. The largest groups were Cubans protesting against Fidel Castro in Cuba and the Haitians protesting US policy on Haitian immigration and promoting human rights in Haiti. I believe the group of kids out there was Communist but they may have just been anarchist. I’m sure they are fighting for something but their delivery was quite poor. There are a dozen photos under the cut. Please click on the link to view them all.

These are all really wonderful. In particular, photos 5 and 8 just seem to jump out at me.

Thank you so much... I really love 8 too... he was such a gentle man that you can tell has seen very bad things... Some of the events that happen in Haiti are so horrific. I often wonder what the transition from Haiti to Miami is like for them. It has got to be amazing... One of the biggest things they are angry about is that when a Cuban comes over by boat and is able to touch US soil they are automatically granted asylum. When anyone else including Haitians are able to get to Miami and touch US soil they are still sent back. Many times they are killed when they are returned. I don’t believe this policy will change anytime soon which is very sad.

hey I just got linked to your journal. Crazy to see you have a photo of me (number 9) speaking. I look like I'm about to cry. And if the group of kids your talking about was those of us who did the chant (pic 11) we're anarchists. That chant was a kinda spur of the moment thing that most of us didn't know before being asked to do it there.

Hello Number 9

If you are indeed anarchists then your delivery was right on ;) Although I believe in much of what you were protesting for and against, I believe change will happen somewhere in the middle and hopefully someday the middle will be much more to the left :)

If you are interested in having copies of all the photos I took of you and your group please let me know, I would be more then happy to share them with you...

i really dig all these protest pictures you post in your journal. i saw some of your stuff linked from an anarchist community im in.

ive kept away from participating in protests because i usually have this preconcieved thought that itll be a bunch of anarcho punks not getting a decent message across or hippies just drumming. The protests with the haitians seem pretty sensible though, maybe ill start showing up.
