Saffron Gates

« previous entry | next entry »

I finally went through the nearly 400 photos I took up in New York of the “Saffron Gates” exhibit by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. It is amazing how difficult it is to narrow it down to only a few favorites, there were so many that I loved but many of those I felt were truly only reportage of the exhibit. It is also very difficult to shoot a photo of an exhibit and make it different then the photos taken by a million plus other people who went through Central Park during the 16 days of the event. I do hope mine stand out even a little. I am also posting much larger versions in my DeviantART account if you are interested in seeing those, click on the photo. There are also 9 more photos under the cut, please take a look and see ;)

You know, I've been to the city a couple of times in the past two weeks, and inevitably (and I mist say, against my will) ended up seeing these "orange curtain" things. I don't know how you managed it, but these pictures are so amazing, they're a billion times better than the real thing.

they really do stand out. i saw a lot of photographers selling photos of the gates at tables around 59th and central park west, and your photos hold up against theirs (the professionals who are making a living standing around selling photos to tourists, so i mean that as a compliment).... and in particular, i like number three because it represents both new york and the gates in a balanced way.

i think the idea behind the installation is at its core, new york, and secondly how new york interacts with this temporary change in its face.

just my thoughts!

Thank you so much for the compliment... I looked through all the photos people were selling there and was a bit disappointed at the quality. I think many of the photographers rushed them out just to make a few bucks :( I did buy 2 of the books that were being sold by Christo and Jeanne-Claude but thought they were much less artistic then just being reportage of the event, either way I did like the books especially the one that had photos of some of his past art projects.

well.. when you look at photos you can see the name of the person that posted it... if you click on their name you can view their gallery... i am not sure there is any way to follow any of your favorite photographers unless you just bookmark them, i saw yours because you joined through me and it shows me your name as someone that went through me... if they do not have it already i think they should add the feature so you can watch certain people...

I think the main reason DeviantART is not up to the caliber of PhotoSIG is because DeviantART is not just a photography site, DeviantART tries to be everything to everyone and that is where they miss out on dominating just one thing. I believe the most popular category in DeviantART is anime so you see where they are getting quite the roundup of different artistic taste. PhotoSIG is just photography and attracts photographers that are just plain amazing! Now all PhotoSIG needs to do is make their user interface easier to use.

I've seen many, many shots of the Gates (most of them on the streets of the city at vendor's tables), but these are really nice. The last two are especially good; I like how you got the stature in #10.

Also, I can't believe you got a clear shot of the Imagine memorial. It must have been a very cold day that it wasn't so crowded there!
